Major Pettigrew's Last Stand - Helen Simonson

one sentence summary:
A love story between a 68 year old retired Major and a 58 year old Pakistani shop keeper in the country side of England.

review:
A love story about "inappropriate" love though we all know that there is no such thing. This is one of the books that taught me an awful lot about life. It is beautifully written with endearing characters, I would love to have tea with the Major. This also does a very good job of illustrating England-Pakastani relations, it is something I never fully grasped until reading this novel how predominant the distrust in the Pakastani community is.  I also loved the very British humour that is running through out the story. I recommend this to anyone who really enjoys reading.

memorable quotes:
“Life does often get in the way of one's reading”

“You are a wise man, Major, and I will consider your advice with great care--and humility." He finished his tea and rose from the table to go to his room. "But I must ask you, do you really understand what it means to be in love with an unsuitable woman?" "My dear boy," said the Major. "Is there really any other kind?”

“The world is full of small ignorances. We must all do our best to ignore them and thereby keep them small, don't you think”

“Only sometimes when we pick and choose among the rules we discover later that we have set aside something precious in the process.”
