One Sentence Summary:
The story of a woman who was kidnapped, kept in a room and only escapes when she has raised the son she had by her captor is old enough to be compliant in the escape.
Review:
This is a very disturbing, but equally well written novel. It is narrated by Jack (the 5 year old boy) which one would think would weaken the story, or at least soften it but it doesn't. The narration seems to put it in an even harsher light, a boy who's mother puts him in a wardrobe and closes the door when "old Jack" comes to visit. Dealing with the adult subjects of kidnap, rape, death and domination from a perspective that doesn't understand it proves Donoghue's strength as a writer.
9/10 (unless you get nightmares from books, in which case this is disturbing so read cautiously)
